چکیده

The Laboratory Phonology research paradigm has established that abstract phonological structure has direct reflections in the spatiotemporal details of speech production. Past exploration of the complex relationship between linguistic structural properties and articulation has resulted in a softening of a severance between phonetics and phonology, which in recent years has begun to likewise encompass the phonetics-prosody interface. The abstract organization not only of words, but also of phrases, has a complex and rich effect on the articulatory details of speech production. This paper considers how phonological and prosodic structure interact in shaping the temporal realization of consonant sequences. Specifically, we examine the influence on articulatory timing of syllable structure effects in onset, coda, and heterosyllabic positions, and prosodic effects in the vicinity of a variety of phrase boundary conditions that grade in strength. Simultaneously, this work seeks to test and refine the π-gesture theoretical model of prosodic representation in speech production (Byrd & Saltzman 2003).

Optimality Theoretic Account of Acquisition of Consonant Clusters of English Syllables by Persian EFL Learners*

This study accounts for the acquisition of the consonant clusters of English syllable structures both in onset and coda positions by Persian EFL learners. Persian syllable structure is "CV(CC)", composed of one consonant at the initial position and two optional consonants at the final position; whereas English syllable structure is "(CCC)V(CCCC)". Therefore, Persian EFL learners need to resolve...

Syllable structure in Old, Middle and Modern Persian: A contrastive analysis

Evolution of languages has always been of interest to linguists.  In this paper we study  the natural progress of the syllable structure from Old  Persian  (O.P)  to Middle Persian (Mi.P) and up to the Modern Persian (Mo.P). For this purpose all the words containing consonant sequences are collected from specific sources of each  of these  languages,  and then  analysed  according to the syllab...

X Domain-initial Articulatory Strengthening in Four Languages

This paper is about one way in which prosody affects individual speech segments, with segmental phonetics showing a perhaps surprising sensitivity to higher-level linguistic structure. By prosody we mean the phrasal and tonal organization of speech. We will show that phonetic properties of individual segments depend on their prosodic position, or position in prosodic structure. It is well-known...

Spanish complex onsets and the phonetics–phonology interface*

This study analyzes cross-dialectal phonetic variation in Spanish complex onsets in light of recent work on the phonetics–phonology interface. Two basic patterns of obstruent-rhotic cluster realization, vowel intrusion and coarticulation-induced rhotic assibilation, receive a phonetically-motivated explanation in terms of the temporal coordination of consonantal gestures, within the framework o...

Timing effects of syllable structure and stress on nasals: A real-time MRI examination

The coordination of velum and oral gestures for English [n] is studied using real-time MRI movies to reconstruct vocal tract aperture functions. This technique allows for the examination of parts of the vocal tract otherwise inaccessible to dynamic imaging or movement tracking. The present experiment considers syllable onset, coda, and juncture geminate nasals and also addresses the effects of ...
